Calculate your required final exam score
Use your average before the final, excluding any placeholder zero for the exam. Find the final exam weight in your syllabus. Enter your target as a percentage rather than a letter grade; your instructor determines the percentage required for an A or a passing mark.
The final exam formula
Required exam score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight. Use the weight as a decimal: a final worth 30% has a weight of 0.30. This assumes the current average represents all coursework outside the final.
Example: an 85% average and a final worth 25%
To finish with 90%, calculate (90 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 105%. That target requires extra credit. To finish with 80% instead, you need (80 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 65% on the final. Changing the target helps you compare realistic outcomes.
When the required score is above 100% or below zero
A result above 100% cannot be reached with a normally capped exam. Ask your instructor whether extra credit or another remaining assignment changes the calculation. A result at or below zero means the numerical target is already met even with zero on the exam, but attendance and minimum-exam-score rules may still apply.
Check the syllabus before making a study plan
Rounding, dropped assignments, minimum passing scores, and separate lab requirements can change your official result. This calculator models one remaining weighted exam. If several assignments remain, calculate their category contributions first. A final with zero weight cannot change the course average.
Frequently asked questions
Should my current grade include the final?
No. Use the grade for completed coursework before the final. If your gradebook already counts a missing final as zero, use the pre-final average instead.
What if the final is worth 0%?
The final cannot change your average. Compare your current grade with your target directly; dividing by a zero exam weight is undefined.
What if the final is my entire grade?
With a 100% exam weight, your required exam score equals your target course percentage.
Can I use this for December finals?
Yes. Use the weights and current average for that particular course. The calculation works for any exam date.
